From July 6 – 7, 2020, Germany‘s international broadcaster will host the 13th Deutsche Welle Global Media Forum, which is preceded by the Fellowship Day on July 5. More than 2,000 media professionals and influencers from over 120 countries join the Global Media Forum each year, making it “The place made for minds”, where they get to network, connect, learn and exchange ideas about the future of media. The theme of the newest edition of the conference will be “Pluralism. Populism. Journalism”.
G L O B A L M E D I A F O R U M 2 0 2 0 Pluralism. Populism. Journalism There have never been more opportunities for free expression than there are now in the digital age. But the downside to all that is that digital information can also open the floodgates to all manner of abuse. Half-truths, rumors and false claims circulate on the net, reinforced by algorithms and agents of so-called “artificial intelligence” — such as social bots. Populists and demagogues take advantage of this in a bid to influence public opinion. The Global Media Forum 2020 will discuss all these prospects and examine what contributions the inevitable digitalization of media and news will have on safeguarding the values of pluralism around the world.
F E L L O W S H I P P R O G R A M Additional day focuses on fellows Like each year, our fellowship program will welcome up to 200 participants to join the Global Media Forum. Funded by the Federal Foreign Office, this initiative targets media professionals, academics, NGO representatives and other influencers from developing and transition countries, paying for all costs associated with travel and accommodation as well as a full conference pass. In addition to attending the two-day conference, the fellowship program will also include access to a half-day capacity building event which will be held on July 5, 2020. On this day, fellows will be offered workshops and trainings in areas such as data journalism, fundraising, and many more. Online registration for visitors and journalists is possible from 01 March 2020, pre-registration is possible from now on.
S C H O L A R S H I P P R O G R A M M E Travel and participation costs are to be borne by the participant.
